Dori Bonner, MA, LPCC
Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate
It is through my own suffering and challenges that I was lead to the counseling profession. I know first hand just how difficult it can be not only to first acknowledge the need for change, but to take the steps necessary in seeking help. Congratulations on your decision and bravery in reaching out.
Perhaps it is through my experience, as a first generation immigrant, that I take pride in being a thoughtful multicultural counselor who accepts people from all walks of life. I am impassioned with motivating youth to appreciate the many opportunities and freedoms unique to those fortunate enough to call the United States of America home. Further, as a military spouse and mom to three military children, I understand the unique challenges that our brave military families encounter and I always consider it an honor and privilege to work with and support veterans and active duty members, as well as their families.
My approach to counseling is to first take the time not only to build a therapeutic alliance with each client by learning your unique story, but to also understand your approach to challenges, tap into your strengths, challenge you to address your limitations and finally customize an evidence based intervention that works best with your unique personality, timeline for therapy, and goals. While I am a solution focused therapist, I also incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution focused therapy, multicultural therapy, culturally sensitive therapy, family systems therapy, working with parents and their children, motivational interviewing, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and play therapy.
A little bit about me on a personal level, I was born in Afghanistan and migrated to the U.S. as a teenager. I earned my citizenship in 2009, which I consider one of my proudest accomplishments, which is why my home is decorated in red, white, and blue all year-round. I’m a military spouse and mom to 3 boys obsessed with dinosaurs and American history. In my spare time I am a motivational speaker and an adjunct professor.
