Rachael Deegan, BA
Master in Counseling Intern
As a mental health student, my program having an emphasis of art therapy, I do not see things in simple black and white. I understand that each of our lives is full of color- unique, complex, and integrated. I take a holistic approach to healing that integrates the mind, body, and soul together to foster long-lasting, effective wellness. I strive to hold a non-judgemental, safe, creative, and comfortable space for my clients that promotes sincerity and freedom of expression. I take a person-centered approach with clients because I feel that the client is the expert in their own life.
Through creativity, curiosity, and compassion, we can work side-by-side to grow through whatever this beautiful and strange life throws at you, some of these things we cannot make sense of with words alone. That is where the language of art therapy comes in. Art therapy offers a new language of artistic expression to explore your emotions, behaviors, beliefs, and inner story. Napoleon Bonaparte once said a picture is worth 1000 words and I have certainly found that to be true in art therapy. Art is gentle, forgiving, flexible, and kind. Art is honest, strong, and unwavering. Through my experience as an art therapy student I have witnessed numerous aha moments from my clients as they have gained touch with parts of themselves they’ve forgotten.
Although my current program has an emphasis on the utilization of art therapy, I am also trained in other modalities as well. All of which assist me in walking alongside my client as they grow and learn more about themselves. I believe that the more you can know about and understand how you function and interact with the world around you, the more you can grow and learn from your experiences. Get to know yourself and grow yourself with me by your side in art therapy!
On a personal note, I am a 7th-generation Coloradan who loves everything to do with nature and art. I spend my free time SUPing, hiking, and doing yoga with my amazing partner. My partner and I have two kids as well as two dogs, one cat, and a school of fish. I am a self-proclaimed cat person- I love their independence, wisdom, curiosity, ferocity, and cuteness. I love to play guitar and sing and am occasionally spotted at local open mics. My artistic nature provides me with a sense of wonder and novelty in day-to-day life. I am always the one who stops to smell the flowers and hug the vanilla-scented pines. Artistic expression has been a source of wealth, magic, support and growth in my life. I hope to support you through your therapeutic journey similarly.
